August 13th 2011Wine   Tasting

It seems like such a long time since our last tasting, let's make this a big one! Many are new, the Bordeaux is a onetime only, and the Opolo is a special, what a great tasting this is going to be.

Fabrini, 2009 Verdicchio Dei Castelli Di Jesi, Classico, $9.99

The quality on this only $9.99 wine is off the charts. You'll either love it or hate it, it starts out a little fruity, though finishes very brisk and big showing lots of lemon and some citrus with floral notes.

Manfred Breit, 2010 Piesporter, Rivaner, Halbtrocken, $12.99 - bottle

Rivaner is also known as Müller-Thurgau, Hermann Müller in the late 19th century crossed Riesling with Sylvaner in an attempt to get a wine that tastes like Riesling but ripens quicker like Sylvaner. In fact here in Virginia and some other parts of the world it's known as a Johannisberg Riesling. All this means the wine is off-dry, clean on the finish, and taste like Riesling with a hint of apple. This is the new vintage, and it's better than ever - oh and the price has dropped, when was the last time you heard that in today's economic climate.

Ca'Bea, 2009 Pinot Noir, $11.99

From northwestern Italy comes this great Pinot showing bright red and bing cherry fruits followed by strawberries, raspberries, light spice and earth, smooth tannins, and what a price for a great pinot!

Chateau Haut Nadeau, 2008 Bordeaux Superieur, Rouge, $19.99 / On Sale $11.99,

Buy by the case and it's only $9.99 a bottle on straight cases only!

Okay all you Bordeaux lovers here is your chance, the winery is anxious to get their 2009 vintage to market, so they are trying to finish out their 2008 vintage first. WOW what a deal! This wine is big, if you like bone dry wine, you'll love it, if you like wine with your food you'll love it, if you want to age this wine for ten years you'll love it. Made from 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon these deals don't come along often, get it while it's here, we have ten cases, and I estimate they'll be gone in two weeks or less, I can't wait for you to try this - put a steak on first, or maybe some grilled lamb.

Cuco, 2009 Red Blend, Jumilla, $11.99

We must apologize, last tasting we ran out of this one and a lot of folks didn't get to try it, well here it is again. This is just too tasty, great with anything off the grill, and priced just right. It's a blend of Syrah, Monastrell, and Tempranillo, deep, dark, and superlatively stewed, it's a monster at this price - quick put something on the grill!

Opolo, 2008 Serenade, Paso Robles, $28.00

Does anyone remember the Zinfandel these folks made? Get ready to be astounded again, It's an almost 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon; this is deep, dark and so wonderfully rich it's almost a sin with its raisin like concentration. They only made 250 cases, there are 150 cases in Virginia, most have been spoken for, we should have this for a short time - two weeks or less, get it now, enjoy, what a treat!!!

As always thank you for your patronage,

Bruce G. Davis
